Following a track in social

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 3:00 pm

Following a track in social theory already partly beaten by Bell, Touraine and others, the causal chain can be described variously. There has been a “profound transformation of society’s conflict structure in the course of the macro historical process of modernization”; or “to explain the ascendancy of new politics and the distinctive features of the new social movements, it is necessary to locate them in a postmodern shift in economic and social organization and culture”. In summary terms, a process of systemic change has occurred – variously termed the emergence of “post-industrial society,” “programmed society,” “post-Fordism,” “high modernity” or “post-modernity” – involving a shift in social composition which has in turn been reflected in the fate of social movements. The working class has been subject to shrinkage, attenuation and incorporation, with weakening effects on labor movements. Simultaneously, the service class or new middle class has grown, and with it have expanded new movements either based on that class or on no class at all. The systemic shift is associated with a change in contested issues. Where previously “material” questions were central in social conflict, now ”post-material,” “symbolic” or “identity” issues are taking centre stage. The waning of old movements and the waxing of new movements is part and parcel of a societal, structural change.

Kaizen combines best of East, West

COLUMN: Dining Review

For a consensus review, I brought in a couple of ringers from Providence with deep experience in sushi and Japanese cuisine. Jim and Pat have been mourning the closure of the New Japan restaurant in that city and signed on quickly to try Sturbridge’s Kaizen Sushi Bar and Grille.

Having lunched at Kaizen a couple of times, I needed a standard of comparison. What emerged is that Kaizen, in its second full year, has an eclectic kick and does a pretty solid job.

More than a raw-fish bar, Kaizen isn’t excluding anyone, with 14 dinner entrees that would undoubtedly fill you out in a more Americanized way. They range from fried Chicken Katsu at $13.50 to a ginger-scallion influenced lobster tail and filet mignon combination at $32.95. And there are sushi, sashimi and maki set pieces ranging from $21.95 to a party-of-three service for $83.

Yet for those who can self-prescribe combinations, there are vast build-your-own options for sushi, sashimi and maki at $4 to $6 apiece that can be shared and augmented

It is now a beautiful

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 8:08 pm

It is now a beautiful addition to our dining room.

- Large plastic containers are great for organizing kids’ rooms. My daughter had a lot of “stuff” stashed all over her room, and we gathered it all up and put all her arts and crafts supplies in one big container, and her writing materials in another. Homework is organized in a plastic container set up as a file organizer, organized by subject.

- Look outside for creative storage ideas. We had to clean out our spare bedroom and had no idea where to put our camping equipment. We don’t have a garage or a shed, so an old camper shell turned out to be the perfect solution. All our camping gear fit into it with room to spare, freeing up more room in the house.

- Organize seasonal decorations in large plastic containers. Plastic wears better than cardboard and if you buy similarly sized containers, they will stack easily and be easy to store.

- A long flat underbed-type plastic storage container is great for organizing holiday gift wrap.

Connect with that thought. Norman Vincent Peale

Connect with that thought. Norman Vincent Peale said, “Change your thoughts and you change your world.”

Family Circle: So if you want to lose 10 pounds. . .

Dyer: First visualize yourself looking the way you want to and never let that picture out of your head. Envision yourself eating healthful foods and exercising. If you hold those thoughts in your mind, you’ll act on them.

Family Circle: So what happens when you focus on all the things that you don’t have?

Dyer: You stay stuck. Every thought you have either makes you stronger or weaker. Thoughts of kindness, hope, forgiveness, and peace are strengthening. Anger, anxiety, worry, and fear weaken you. You must process events in terms of appreciation rather than depreciation. You either feel that the universe is plentiful and providing, or you feel short-changed, that nothing is ever right. That’s what I call a scarcity mentality – expecting that things won’t work out for you.

Dont Be Fooled by Salt-Less Softening Device Claims: Studies Show That Only Water Softeners Soften Water

Business Wire, July 14, 2010

Culligan helps homeowners assess their water softener options with
a free in-home water analysis

CHICAGO — The results of a recent Water Quality Research Foundation (WQRF) study1
reinforced what consumers with hard water problems have known for years:
that soft water is good. This research proved that water softeners can
save measurable energy and thwart the scale buildup that can shorten the
lifespan of household appliances and clog showerhead nozzles. Yet,
increased advertising that promotes a new generation of salt-less
devices is stirring confusion in the market.

While salt-less products may provide some benefits, independent studies
by several third-party experts including the Water Quality Association,2
the Army Corps of Engineers3 and Penn State University4 question
the efficacy of these devices and offer supporting evidence that they do not
produce soft water.

Consumers should know the facts: only water softeners soften water,
said Eric Rosenthal, Senior Vice President, Marketing for Culligan.
There are other available water softening options that are both highly
efficient and environmentally sound. Were here to help educate people
on how they can continue to enjoy the benefits of soft water with a system
thats right for their level of water hardness, their lifestyle, their
community and their budget.

Get Your Free Water Analysis Today

To help guide residents in this decision, local Culligan dealers are
offering a free in-home water analysis. This complimentary water test
will diagnose the degree of water hardness to determine the best method
of treating it. Professional
water experts from Culligan can even check current water softening
equipment in the home to see if it is performing as it should. To take

Just give your specific situation some

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 12:29 pm

Just give your specific situation some thought.

When and Where?

If you are sending a marketing proposal document to a client you will be looking to impress your existing or potential. But beware, the use of bright, fluorescent colors might not go down too well with a firm of accountants or lawyers but may well be appreciated by a music/video company.

If it is an internal document, do you need to use color at all? Consider the cost implication of doing this – Ink cartridge and laser toner usage etc. Unless the purpose of the document is, for example, to explain some major change in company structure, then I suggest you keep to black and white or minimise the color involved.

A situation where you may consider color for internal purposes would be for the production of safety messages. These need to stand out and be noticed.

Finally remember:

Don’t use too many colors or too much colored text. You may lose the impact and readability of the work.

White text on a black background is harder to reader than black on white.

Similarly, avoid placing too many color pictures, images or icons on a page.

Use a color photograph in preference to an illustration or drawing..for selling in particular.

Used correctly, color can break up the monotony of black-and-white text reading.

Whatever color theme you have, stick to it throughout the document or presentation.

Graphs and charts in particular will capture more attention if in color.

For the graphs etc, don’t forget to explain what the colors mean though!

And don’t forget to put captions under pictures.

New villas add luxury option to Maida Vale

0 Comments | Taranaki Daily News; New Plymouth, New Zealand, Jul 23, 2010 | by Kath BROWN

Accommodation choices in the village expand with development of new villas, writes Kath Brown

LIFE at Maida Vale embraces an increasing variety of residential and accommodation options.

The lastest is a new luxury villa option, the first of which is on show at an open day at the village this weekend.

The village offers a choice of villas, apartments, rest home rooms and a hospital. All the villas are different, and residents are allowed to bring their pets – as long as they are not a nuisance for anyone else.

As with everything at Maida Vale, common sense prevails. Everybody can have a garden if they desire and a garden shed. Customer services manager Karla Wynd’s 99-year-old grandfather recently moved in and he already has a thriving garden.

The rooms in the rest home and hospital are large and most of them have ensuites. Registered nurses provide 24-hour care. A doctor visits twice a week and all bloods are done on site.

With all these facilities and the wonderful views, both sea and mountain, Maida Vale is a popular place for those over 55 to live. Situated in the middle of 17 acres of park-like grounds, the boutique village is about to get bigger.

“We have 38 villas and are building 14 more,” says Karla. “What is really exciting is that these are all luxury villas, with the best of everything.”

These new villas offer customers the latest in luxury as well as choice. “Buyers can choose their own interior design, the curtains, carpet, kitchen colours and bench top,” says Karla.

The kitchens are superbly designed with all mod cons – pull- out shelving in the cupboards for easy access, a range hood and ceramic stove top and wall oven. The benches are Caesarstone quartz, which lasts forever and always looks attractive.

The kitchen window overlooks a deck that is reached via the garage, which also has internal access and a remote-controlled door.

Practicality adds to the luxury detail. The linen cupboard is large and functional with plenty of storage space.

There are three bedrooms, all spacious, and the master bedroom has a double wardrobe and ensuite
